Reading Sewing Patterns--envelop

You want your first pattern to be pretty easy, or you are very unlikely to enjoy your sewing experience. Pajamas make a good first project because they don't have to be perfect. They also usually don't involve any advanced techniques. Look for a pattern that is labeled "easy" or one that is labeled "2 hour." (Don't believe for a minute that you will sew them in 2 hours, but the 2-hour patterns are easier than many.) When determining your size, do not depend on your ready-to-wear size. Measure yourself and choose the size that will fit you based on the chart on the pattern envelop. Most contemporary patterns come with multiple sizes in the envelop. I'll cover more information about that later, but for now, just know that you need to get the size range that has your size in it. For elastic-waist pajama bottoms, go by your hip measurement.
